Light gives life to everything in to everything in this world and that why perhaps light is the most important aspect of photography as it gives life to your photos as well. Photography itself means “writing with life”. Taking images from various positions keeping the directions and rays of light is considered to be most valuable knowledge about photography. Skill is not fully natural you have to work upon it and like you polish the simple looking rock and it becomes diamond so is the case with photography. One has to practice and understand why and where light is important when he are taking his shots. It is only the light that will tell you how your pictures look; how they shape and how do they appear. It is the light that gives three dimensions to the flat two dimension world.
Using light in photography involves your creative sense, it nurtures your creativity into something valuable, and you just have to realize how to use it in numerous directions. It is you to determine the quality of light which refers to the direction of light, color, and texture ultimately. Direct light will enhance the texture and sharpness of your images and also will give the spirit and look of three dimensions by enhancing shadows and dark areas. Direction of sun light is extremely important as it allowed you to boost your images by choosing the best direction in that particular situation. Direct light from your shoulders will produce plane pictures with no edges and shades in it as the hard bright light will produce no shades and ultimately the result would not be impressive.
Side lighting in photography is extremely essential. You have to wait for the right moment to capture images in sun light if you can’t position yourself for the side lighting picture. The best time for taking such picture is morning or in evening when the sun light will be hitting your object in a sideway direction. This will produce more contrast in picture as the shadows and bright spots will be clearly visible. It’s also good to take pictures of animals in side lighting as it will sharpen the contrast in the furs resulting in more pixel rich pictures.
When the light is right behind your subject it is called backlighting. It is most difficult to take images in this direction. If you keep practicing this you will start producing some outstanding pictures with the thin brim of light at the edges of the object which gives a special effect to your snaps. You will have to set your camera to best possible exposure and must take decisions as to what part of the object is important to you in your picture.
At the end lighting direction is significant aspect to understand in photography, it also is up to your personal and natural abilities about how you exploit and use various directions of light in your images. As each photographer has its own way of taking pictures.
